IG: FBI Not Doing Enough To Combat Child Porn

January 26. 2009

FBI Director Robert Mueller

The FBI received a failing grade from the inspector general for the U.S. Justice Department, regarding its efforts to combat internet child porn. With an estimated 3,000,000 to 4,000,000 pedophiles in America, the FBI needs to redouble its efforts to crackdown on that terrible crime.

F.B.I. Internet Child Porn report

There's a new report out about the US government's efforts to fight child pornography on the Internet. And it appears the FBI is lagging in its efforts to keep up with the amount of material out there.

The inspector general for the US Justice Department says the number of child porn cases handled by the FBI rose more than 20-fold between the 1996 and 2007 budget years. As a result, there's a backlog in the FBI's computer labs that handle digital evidence.

The report says it takes an average of about two months to examine evidence in online child porn cases and in some cases, it takes as long as nine months. (ccg) (The Associated Press)
