Coldplay Accused Of Plagiarism Again

May 4. 2009

Coldplay

Legendary singer Cat Stevens has accused band Coldplay of stealing the melody from his 1970's hit "Foreigner" for use in their 2008 song "Viva La Vida."

Several months ago, Coldplay was sued for ripping off veteran guitarist Joe Satriani's 1980's melody from the song "If I Could Fly."

At first when I heard the first few minutes of the song "Foreigner" by Cat Stevens I genuinely could not find an infringement. Then when the song hit the 3:37 second mark, I realized what he was complaining about.

There are similarities to the melody Coldplay later used for "Viva La Vida." However, I think Coldplay ripped off  Satriani the most. One can drop the preexisting Satriani melody over the infringing Coldplay melody and obtain a perfect match. However, there are a few notes that are different in the Cat Stevens composition, as compared to the Coldplay melody.

It's ironic that Chris Martin (Coldplay's lead singer) and his wife, Gwen Paltrow, are mixed up in Kabbalah, whose figurehead is Madonna.

It was reported she suggested the Frieda Khalo rip off CD cover for the "Viva La Vida" artwork. But how ironic is it, that a few years ago, it was pointed out through sites like mine, that Madonna ripped off Cat Stevens. She also worked with Satriani prior to fellow Kabbalah members' Coldplay ripping him off.

MADONNA'S INFRINGEMENT OF CAT STEVEN'S WORK:

Madonna stole lyrics for "Impressive Instant"

Madonna was publicly accused of ripping off Cat Steven's "The Wind" for her later released song "Impressive Instant" from the album "Music."

Cat Stevens' lyric from "The Wind": "I let my music take me where my heart wants to go"

Madonna rip off lyric from "Impressive Instant": I let the music take me, take me where my heart wants to go"

Of course, she'll say it's different because she added an extra take me to the lyric she stole.

It's clear that lot sit around all day when they are not performing, thinking up crazy stuff and going over other people's music and films, looking for items to rip off.

Coldplay called out again for plagiarizing? This time, it's Cat Stevens

May 4, 2009, 03:12 PM - Viva la Lawsuit! Less than six months ago, guitar icon Joe Satriani filed a claim seeking "any and all profits" for the piano-rock superstars' "Viva la Vida," stating that the Grammy-winning smash contained "substantial original portions" of the track "If I Could Fly," from his 2004 album Is There Love in Space? album. Now, Coldplay may be facing more legal problems -- for the same song.

Legendary bearded folkie Yusuf Islam, a.k.a. The Artist Formerly Known as Cat Stevens, has accused the band of jacking his 18-minute-long 1973 epic "Foreigner Suite" for "Viva," telling the U.K. Sun, "There’s been this argument about Coldplay stealing this melody from Joe Satriani. But if you listen to it, it’s mine! It’s the 'Foreigner Suite,' it is!"

And Islam has successfully sued before; in 2003, he won split profits from the Flaming Lips for their Soft Bulletin song "Fight Test," because of the track's similarity to his campfire classic "Father and Son."
