Iraqi Journalist Throws Shoes And Insults At Bush

Americans Throw Pies, Iraqis Throw Shoes

December 15. 2008

Outgoing U.S. president George W. Bush received an unconventional greeting from a journalist in Iraq. During Bush’s farewell speech, an angry Iraqi journalist threw his shoes at him, one almost hitting the president.

I did not agree with this. If the journalist had thrown it a little more to the left, it would have made a direct hit (LOL). The incident has become a hit, pardon the pun, all over the world.

On a more serious note, the angry journalist expressed his disdain for Bush, because of the illegal war in Iraq he ordered under false pretenses, that has killed over 1 million Iraqi civilians, displaced an additional 4 million people, destroyed their country’s infrastructure (electricity, sewer and water systems) and created extensive damage to roads and buildings. Their way of life has been destroyed.

The journalist stated upon throwing his shoes, which is a massive insult in that region of the world, "This is a gift from the Iraqis. This is the farewell kiss, you dog. This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq." [link]

An Iraqi journalist threw two shoes towards George W Bush, without hitting him, as the US president was shaking hands with the Iraqi prime minister in his office in Baghdad on Sunday, an AFP journalist said.

Shoe insult against Bush resounds in Arab world

BAGHDAD: A day after an Iraqi television journalist threw his shoes at President George W. Bush at a news conference here Sunday, his act of defiance toward the American commander in chief reverberated throughout Iraq and across the Arab world.

In Sadr City, the sprawling Baghdad suburb that has seen some of the most intense fighting between insurgents and U.S. soldiers since the 2003 invasion, thousands of people marched in his defense. In Syria, he was hailed as a hero. In Libya, he was given an award for courage.

Throughout much of the Arab world Monday, the shoe-throwing incident generated front-page headlines and continuing television news coverage. A thinly veiled glee could be discerned in much of the reporting, especially in the places where anti-American sentiment runs deepest.
