Opposition To Obama's Stimulus Plan Continues

January 30. 2009

President Barack Obama

President Barack Obama continues to run into opposition from Republicans regarding his $800 billion stimulus plan, largely due to certain items some Democratic senators are pushing for. I can see why they are concerned. I'm not taking sides, just being impartial.

As mentioned previously here and here I believe Pelosi's $335,000,000 STD prevention plan is not in-keeping with the theme of job creation. Nor is the $70,000,000 Democrats want in the bill to prevent people from smoking. There are other questionable items in the package as well. You'll be squandering funds needed elsewhere.

Republican John Boehner

If this is the unfocused, undisciplined spending to come from some Democrats, the stimulus shall fail to remedy what ails the American economy. Furthermore, the massive lack of arrests of criminals in corporate America, guarantees a serious financial crisis will happen again.

The government has some tough decisions to make and if they choose the wrong options, things are going to get worse. If they act with integrity, thrift and common sense, there can be recovery.

Breaking Down Stimulus Bill's Opposition

CBS Evening News: With Plenty Of Spending Add-Ons, Obama's Stimulus Bill Comes Under Scrutiny

WASHINGTON, Jan. 30, 2009 | by Wyatt Andrews

Despite President Obama's efforts to achieve bipartisan support for his stimulus plan, congressional Republicans have criticized the bill for "wasteful spending." …

If you are one of those taxpayers that doesn't want to spend $25 million on trails for ATVs, or $150 million for agricultural repairs (like beehives after a storm), then you'll understand why no Republicans supported the stimulus in the House -- and why most Republicans are trashing it in the Senate…

It includes $650 million to help people switch their old TV signals to digital and $335 million to prevent sexually transmitted disease - a program House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D- Calif., defends because disease education creates jobs, too…

But emergency bills aren't paid for with higher taxes or budget cuts - the stimulus is all borrowed money. And so anything Congress couldn't afford before -- $50 million to support the arts, $70 million to help people stop smoking -- has found its way into the stimulus now…
