'Murphy Brown' Reboot Takes Potshots At President Donald Trump And His Daughter Ivanka September 27. 2018
"Murphy Brown" reboot cast Tonight I viewed the “Murphy Brown” sitcom reboot on television, regarding a hit show that has been off the air for 20-years. “Murphy Brown” is about a recovering alcoholic news journalist. The character was clearly patterned after television journalist Barbara Walters. The reboot is a weaker, less feisty version of the original that aired between 1989-1999. “Murphy Brown” was a hit when I was a kid. However, I really did not remember the episodes. Growing up I knew the show had a controversy with former U.S. vice president, Dan Quayle, regarding her being a single mother, but that was all I remembered of it. Back in January, I began watching reruns of “Murphy Brown” on Antenna TV and found some of the episodes interesting. I don’t care for its disrespectful take on religion, but that’s standard tone deaf Hollywood ignorance, which the majority in America don‘t find amusing.
The original "Murphy Brown" series cast Half way through watching the reruns, CBS announced they would be rebooting “Murphy Brown.” I wasn’t too taken with the idea of it for a number of reasons. When the original show was on the air, Hollywood had writers who could write and had creative ideas. Today, Hollywood is run by untalented, crazy cultists, who do mind numbingly stupid and damaging things on a daily basis. Yes, the MeToo movement has thankfully given some of them the boot (Les Moonves, Harvey Weinstein, James Gunn and Bryan Singer) among others. However, some still remain, such as the depraved Chuck Lorre, among others. But I digress. The new “Murphy Brown” is not as good as the original. Murphy
has lost her spunk. Old age has mellowed her out a lot. All the characters are
weaker versions of themselves. The new sets are not as good as the original. The
character “Jim Dail” also does not make an appearance in the first few episodes,
though he was an important part of the show.
Candice Bergen in the 1960s The show took potshots at current U.S. President Donald Trump, creating a (fake) Twitter war between him and Murphy, where he calls her “old.” The war was initiated by Murphy who went public with the news that she used to date Trump. The first episode also featured a moping Hillary Clinton, still bitter that she lost the election (she is never going to get over this). The show also took shots at the president’s daughter, Ivanka Trump. The character Corky had sore feet from walking at a protest wearing Ivanka’s brand of shoes commenting she wore them because they were cheap, “They were on sale. A dollar a shoe.” Murphy’s son Avery, who is now all grown up, took a job with a rival network. Try to guess the name of the network. It was Fox, but the show mockingly renamed it the “Wolf” network (LOL). Avery tried to explain his position to Murphy, who does not want him working at Fox, um I mean, Wolf, stating non-liberals need a voice too. Murphy replied, “They’ve got one. It’s orange, lives in the Oval Office and is Facebook friends with Putin.” I think the show wants a real Twitter fight with the president. RELATED ARTICLE |
