At first I misread the next headline and thought it stated, "Jerry Lewis detained for carrying gum at airport." Then I thought, why are they roughing up a senior citizen for carrying chewing gum. Is that in the Patriot Act or something?

But then I reread it and oh what a difference a letter makes. He was caught carrying a "gun" not "gum." Still, I was stunned, an 82-year-old packing heat? Then I remembered Dick Cheney and suddenly the story became plausible.

Tue Jul 29, 2008 7:56pm EDT - LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian Jerry Lewis was detained by police in Las Vegas late last week when airport screeners found an unloaded gun in his baggage, authorities said on Tuesday.

Lewis, 82, had a small .22-caliber handgun when he arrived at the security screening area on Friday at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport, said Officer Ramon Denby, a spokesman for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
