Beyonce’s "Cadillac Records" Bombs

December 8. 2008

Casting Beyonce as Etta James in the movie Cadillac Records was a mistake, but it is said the Destinys Child singer heavily lobbied for the role. The film flopped at the box office this past weekend, with opening sales of $3.5 million in 700 theatres.

By comparison, during the first stages of its release, her previous film, Dreamgirls, also starring Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, was screened in roughly the same number of theatres, but sold four times as well, with a higher per screen average gross. Then again, Hudson’s performance was the star.

This is not good news for Sony, as “Cadillac Records” cost $12 million to make and $15 million to market, but the movie grossed $3.5 million, which is worse than W’s first week numbers and that film went on to flop.

As I stated last month, Beyonce is not an actress. She cannot act. She is only given film roles due to her singing career, which is now suffering a sales decline as well.

Beyonce's 'Cadillac' Records Soft Weekend

Cadillac Records, starring Beyonce, Gabrielle Union, Mos Def and Jeffrey Wright has opened soft at theaters.

According to the 'Box Office Report,' 'Cadillac Records' brought in just $3.5 million over the weekend.

Shown in 686 theaters, the film, which centers around the life of iconic singer Etta James, was beat out by 'Four Christmases' which grossed $18.2 million at the box office followed by 'Twilight' (13.2 million) and 'Bolt' (9.7 million).
