Fashion Line Slammed For Promoting Racist Colonialism

April 9. 2018

Recently, Italian coffee company, Saquella 1856, was slammed in Britain for releasing a line of slave coffee, which ended up getting pulled from store shelves after offending consumers (Slave Coffee Causes Outrage In Another Move To Normalize And Bring Slavery Back In Modern Times).

This month, Italian fashion line, Big Uncle, debuted a series of ugly clothes called "Colonialism" and "Colonial Deal." The clothes in the line have the word "Colonialism" emblazoned on them, in reference to slavery and Britain, who had enslaved Africans and other people of color, making colonies of nations in places such as the Caribbean. A petition has been launched to have the clothing line banned. Not to mention, the clothes are really ugly, much like the heart of the person who started it.

Italian fashion label is accused of racism over ‘colonialism’ collection

Miranda LarbiSunday 8 Apr 2018 11:16 am - An Italian fashion label is under fire for it’s new Spring Summer collection inspired by…colonialism. Big Uncle, a Milan-based menswear brand, has denied endorsing a ‘historically bloody period full of atrocities’. It describes its new ‘Colonial Deal’ range as a ‘short and intense journey in the West [sic] former colonies in order to understand the Colonialism style’. It even goes so far as saying that ‘[some of] the linen is rough like the faces consumed by the sun’.

So, you can imagine that not everyone’s happy about the range. After all, it’s pretty odd to want to pay homage to a period of constant raping and savaging of other lands…let alone actually referring to sun-roughened skin as a novelty. This brand, founded in 2014, defines itself as being based on a ‘strong identity’ that ‘tells the story of metropolitan lives and travels around the world, where inspiration is then found in every collection’. Mireille Harper has launched a petition demanding the line be binned – and she’s already got 600 signatures...
