Judge Indicted On Human Trafficking Charges

Crooked Judge And His Family In Trouble For Violating The Civil Rights Act

June 18. 2008

Russell Garrett (judge's son also charged)

According to the FBI, “D. William Garrett, Jr., 72, a Fulton County Magistrate Judge, of Alpharetta, Georgia” has been charged with, “Human trafficking, alien harboring, witness tampering, and making false statements.”

The judge, his wife and son are formally accused of violating the Civil Rights Act for enslaving a nanny from India, in forcing her to work 16 hour days, not paying her, threatening and intimidating her, and "curtailing her freedom and ability to leave their home." They also defamed her in Atlanta, destroying her name, and threatened to do the same in India if she left. They made false statements to the authorities about her as well, for which they are also being charged.

They each face 50 years in prison.

United States Attorney David E. Nahmias said: “This case is an example of alleged domestic servitude of a nanny brought over from India. This type of abuse is insidious, as it preys upon those who are vulnerable due to their immigration status and unfamiliarity with this country’s legal system. Not paying someone for their hard work, and then threatening them with deportation if they report such abuse, is a violation of federal civil rights laws. The Department of Justice will vigorously prosecute this form of modern day slavery.”
