Obama Eases Cuban Embargo Restrictions

April 13. 2009

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle

President Barack Obama has eased restrictions in the U.S. embargo against Cuba that was implemented in 1962. I agree with this move, as stated previous, because it can open up Cuba to a level of free trade most nations of the world have access to, giving Cuban-Americans, the majority of which reside in Miami, a chance to visit home often and do great things in their homeland.

There have been times Cuba has faced massive food and medicine shortages due to this embargo, that is only hurting everyday people of their nation.

Cuban-Americans who have tasted financial prosperity and success in America, must remember what it is like for their brothers and sisters in their homeland, struggling with lack. In Miami, one can go to Walgreens (pharmacy/chemist) or Pollo Tropical (restaurant) whenever one feels like. In Cuba, it's another story.

The embargo has not softened the Cuban government's political leanings, only served to strengthen it and embitter them in the process. It's time to try another approach, for the sake of the people of Cuba.

Past U.S. administrations attempting to financially strangle a small island nation, for being communist, is not the answer, nor was it humane. It is also hypocritical, as America does big business with China.

I'm not saying adopt communism, as I know I never will, but afford them the basic trade rights other nations of the world enjoy. Things are particularly difficult worldwide for many, due to the financial crisis that sprouted on Wall Street. Cuba was also hit with hurricane after hurricane recently. An embargo shall only do further damage to an already suffering nation.

Obama eases travel, money transfers for Cuban-Americans

WASHINGTON — President Obama altered the nation's Cuba policy on Monday, lifting restrictions on Cuban-Americans to visit their relatives on the island and send them financial assistance.

"There are no better ambassadors for freedom than Cuban-Americans," said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.

The announcement fulfills an Obama campaign promise, and comes less than a week before he attends a summit with Latin American leaders; many of those leaders have urged the U.S. to moderate its stance towards the communist government of Cuba.

The adminstration is also allowing telecommunications companies to seek cellphone and television services linking Cuba and the United States, according to Obama's order...
