Bobby Paul Edwards

This is a follow up to the June 15, 2018 article "White Restaurant Manager Beat And Enslaved Black Mentally Disabled Man For Years Forcing Him To Work Long Hours For Free In South Carolina."

In 2019 restaurant owner, Bobby Paul Edwards, was sentenced to 10-years in prison for beating and enslaving intellectually disabled black man, John Christopher Smith, in South Carolina. Edwards forced Smith to live in a little room on the restaurant's premises and work 100 hours per week for no pay.

The Insider website reported that Edwards would beat Smith with "a belt, fists, and pots and pans." It was also reported during the trial that in other acts of cruelty, Edwards, would also burn Smith with tongs whenever he didn't work fast enough.

This week an appellate court ruled Edwards must pay Smith $546,000 in financial restitution for criminally abusing him and keeping him as a slave. It's amazing how some people still think slavery is in full effect. I must say though, Bobby Paul Edwards, would fit right in at the FBI or in Hollywood.

An appellate court recently ruled that Smith is entitled to $546,000 in restitution. A man with an intellectual disability who was enslaved by a restaurant owner in South Carolina for five years should be awarded $546,000, a court ruled.

In 2019, Bobby Paul Edwards, who owned the J&J Cafeteria in Conway, South Carolina, pleaded guilty to one count of forced labor for "coercing an African-American man with an intellectual disability to work extensive hours at a restaurant for no pay," and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, the Justice Department said in a press release at the time...
