The State Of Florida Sued For Under-Reporting Coronavirus Infections And Deaths Placing Governor Ron DeSantis On The Hot Seat

May 5. 2020

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis

Florida governor Ron DeSantis is on the hot seat over his handling of the coronavirus outbreak. In March, DeSantis berated New Yorkers during a televised briefing in his office, for flying down to Florida during the pandemic, when New York is the epicenter of the outbreak in America (Testing Reveals An Increased Number Of Coronavirus Infections In America).

In April, DeSantis was sued by the Miami Herald newspaper for concealing the number of coronavirus infections and deaths in Florida nursing homes. Considering the fact Florida is a retirement state in America, full of the elderly, there are many people in nursing homes who have been impacted by the virus.

Case in point, yesterday on the local news in Miami (WTVJ Channel 6), there was a reported about Fair Havens Center nursing home in Miami Springs. Fair Havens Centers has 269 rooms and of that number 100 elderly patients are infected with coronavirus (Covid-19). One of the residents, Jose Garcia, died from coronavirus. However, when you read the State of Florida records released by DeSantis' office, it states Miami Springs only has 4 coronavirus infections and o deaths.

A new report was released last week revealing Governor DeSantis ordered medical examiners in Florida to stop releasing coronavirus death figures. There was also emphasis on withholding these figures in Palm Beach County, which is largely occupied by elderly people.

For several weeks no numbers have been released on South Florida news channels regarding the infection and death rates regarding coronavirus in Palm Beach County, which includes Palm Beach the city and Boca Raton, two big retirement hubs. It is due to the fact news channel have been unable to obtain the figures from DeSantis.

Ironically, last week DeSantis slammed "fearmongering" regarding reopening the State of Florida for business. He emphasized Florida did far better than was predicted. However, as he has been withholding the true coronavirus infection rate and death count for the state, how can one know that.

I understand this is an unprecedented outbreak and one that has scared many people. However, downplaying what has occurred is not the answer to the problem. Medical science needs accurate data to proceed accordingly. Local government cover-ups will only hurt in the longrun.
