Former Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai Has Died

February 16. 2018

Morgan Tsvangirai

The former Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, Morgan Tsvangirai, has died of cancer in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was 65-years-old. Tsvangirai famously stood up to tyrant, Robert Mugabe, who corruptly ruled Zimbabwe with an iron fist, while his wife looted the national treasury.

When the threat of Tsvangirai becoming a contender for the premiership began to take shape, Mugabe had him arrested in separate incidents on fraudulent charges that were later dismissed. Tsvangirai and members of his party were also beaten by police, in an incident orchestrated by Mugabe. Tsvangirai's bodyguard was also killed during a Mugabe ordered crackdown on the opposition, which was undemocratic and highly illegal.

Tsvangirai won the majority of the votes in a subsequent election, but Mugabe had the results altered in a fraudulent attempt at remaining in office. Mugabe's conduct was internationally condemned, which led to a power sharing agreement, with Tsvangirai as Prime Minister and Mugabe as President.

Tsvangirai died on valentine's day. However, he lived to see Mugabe ousted from office, with Zimbabweans celebrating in the streets. Tsvangirai will be remembered for his courage in standing up to a dictator and prevailing in becoming head of state.
