Jussie Smollet Forced To Sell Los Angeles House At A Loss After Being Fired From ‘Empire’

Disgraced actor Jussie Smollet was hit with a whirlwind of legal problems of his own making, after filing a false police report in February, claiming two white Trump supporters beat him up, threw bleach on him and yelled racial and homophobic slurs in his face in Chicago. Government officials in Chicago were so saddened and embarrassed that such a thing happened in their city. However, it turns out the whole thing was a lie on Smollet’s part.

Chicago police investigated and discovered it was a hoax Smollet staged for publicity and a salary increase on the Fox television show “Empire.” Former U.S. President Barack Obama, who became friends with Smollet at the White House during his tenure in office, questionably got Smollet off the criminal charges. However, the City of Chicago then brought a case against the actor for $130,000 in restitution. This added to the already mounting legal fees from defending the criminal charges brought against him for filing a false police report, in wasting police resources.

Smollet’s financial troubles were not over yet. Smollet’s conduct resulted in “Empire” and several black shows on Fox being cancelled, putting hundreds of people out of work. Smollet was making $60,000 per episode. Therefore, his main source of income ended. Smollet’s misconduct also resulted in him losing a number of acting and music jobs he was lined up to perform prior the incident.

Smollet began selling his assets in light of his new financial circumstances and his Los Angeles house became a top priority for liquidation. When celebrities sell their homes, they often make a profit off name recognition in cities such as Los Angeles and New York. Well, not this time. Smollet had to quickly sell his house in a fire sale. Smollet, who bought the Studio City house in 2017, sold the 3 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom, 2,600 square foot house at a $30,000 loss. He bought the property for $1,680,000 and sold it for $1,655,000 three-weeks ago.
