Theresa May's 'Hostile Environment' Is Set To Harm Britons Born In Britain But Living In The European Union Under Brexit

July 27. 2018

Theresa May

There are an estimated 1,500,000 British people living in the European Union (EU). This week a report revealed that Britons living in the EU will not be able to collect their pensions via bank accounts anymore (Britain's pending departure from the EU). This is due to a "no deal" Brexit proposal by British Prime Minister Theresa May, who is having a very difficult time in negotiations.

Britons living in the EU also will not be able to open a bank account in Britain, because to do so you must be a British resident. Barclays offers a work around, regarding international citizens and residents depositing $50,000 to open a bank account. Why can't a non-resident open a bank account in Britain you ask? A few years ago when May was Home Secretary, she put in place a self-professed "hostile environment" targeting immigrants, both legal and illegal, demanding an extraordinary amount of paperwork to open a bank account or rent a flat/house in Britain.

May's plan was to discourage immigrants from staying in or coming to Britain, by making it so "hostile" and difficult to live in with all these requirements, they would flee the country and not come back. Now May's "hostile environment" is going to harm people born in Britain who are now living abroad that seek to collect their pensions. It's not right, as these Brits paid into the system by working for years in Britain and deserve their money. As they've gotten older, some have moved to warmer climates such as the south of France and Spain and there's nothing wrong with that. However, there's everything wrong with May's negotiating tactics.

May is going to have to change aspects of her rigid "hostile environment" policy, such as allowing a government waiver regarding Brits abroad opening domestic bank accounts in the UK. If she doesn't, I suggest the Brits whose pensions are in danger, stick it to her at the polls by voting her out.

May's inflexibility has harmed Britain on so many financial and social fronts, from Theresa May’s Appalling Treatment Of Foreign Doctors, Scientists, IT Specialists And Students Is Damaging The British Economy To The Tune Of Billions to Theresa May Deported Thousands Of Students From Britain And Destroyed Their Academic Records By Falsely Alleging They Cheated On Tests.

It has become painfully clear May is not thinking her behavior through. She is making spur of the moment decisions that when properly examined are not in the best interest of Britain. This pension incident is the latest bad decision. Once again,  she will have to provide some kind of waiver for Brits living abroad and British based banks in the European Union will have to offer special services to open bank accounts in Britain, but from European Union locations.

No-deal Brexit will make it ‘illegal’ to pay pensions to retired British expats living in EU, MPs told

It could be “illegal” to pay private pensions to many retired British expats if the UK crashes out of the EU without a deal, MPs have been told. The Association of British Insurers said pensioners who receive their payments into bank accounts in their adopted countries could be left without cash. “That is a perfectly plausible risk in the future if no agreement is reached in some countries of the EU,” said Huw Evans, the ABI’s director general.

An alarmed Hilary Benn, the Brexit committee’s chairman, said: “They might find that they couldn’t be paid their pension – is that what you are saying?” The warning came as Britain’s leading service industries attacked Theresa May’s Chequers plan for Brexit, the Commercial Broadcasters Association suggesting they had been “thrown under the bus”...
